Privacy

Quartier shows you everything around you, however you go. That needs your location. It does not need your name, your email, your contacts, or a record of what you do all day — and we do not take them.
No account, no analytics, no ads. There is no sign-up: the app creates an anonymous account by itself, with a random handle. The app carries no analytics SDK, no advertising SDK, and no tracking of any kind. We do not sell or share personal data with anyone for advertising, and we do not build profiles of you.
What we store
- An anonymous account
- An identifier and a randomly generated display name (e.g. "Amber Poplar 11"). No email address, phone number or real name is asked for or kept. You may change the display name in the Me tab.
- Your reach anchor
- The coordinate your reach is measured from, plus the travel mode and the minute settings for your three zones. This is what makes the feed work: the server holds one point per account so it can answer "what is inside this person's reach" without recomputing a map on your phone. It is overwritten as you move — we do not keep a history of where you have been.
- What you post
- The text, price, times and photos of anything you post, and its location. Board posts carry no coordinate at all. Every other kind stores two: an exact point, kept private and used only to decide whether a post is inside someone's reach, and a grid-snapped point, which is the only one ever drawn on a map or sent to a reader.
- Messages, replies and joins
- Direct and event-group messages, replies on posts, and which events you joined. Messages are readable by the people in that conversation and by us as the operator; they are not end-to-end encrypted.
- Reports and blocks
- If you report content or block someone, we keep that so moderation works and so the block holds. A blocked person is not told.
What stays on your phone
Saved places — Home, Work, anywhere you name — are stored only on your device. Their labels and coordinates are never uploaded. Browsing from a saved place moves your anchor to that coordinate; the label itself never leaves the phone.
What other people can see
Exposure is decided by the reader's reach, never by you choosing an audience. What a reader can see of a post depends on its kind:
- Board — a neighbourhood name only. No map, no coordinate.
- Offer / Want — an approximate area, drawn as a dashed circle. The exact spot is something you share in chat, if you choose to.
- Event — an approximate area until someone joins; the meeting point is revealed to people who joined.
Photos you attach to a post are stored in a public bucket, which means anyone holding the file's URL can open it, whether or not the post is within their reach. Do not post a photo you would not want seen outside the app.
An event you post can be shared as a web link. That page shows the event's title, time, approximate area and photo to anyone who opens it. Board, Offer and Want posts cannot be shared this way.
Who else processes it
We use a small number of services to run the app. They process data on our instructions, and none of them receives it for advertising:
- Supabase — database, anonymous authentication, photo storage and realtime chat (hosted in the United States).
- Mapbox — map tiles, and walking and driving travel times. Map tiles are fetched by your phone, so Mapbox sees the area you are looking at.
- Geoapify — public-transport travel times.
- Cloudflare — the website you are reading and shared event pages.
- Apple and Expo — app distribution and over-the-air updates.
Travel times are computed on our server for a coarse map cell shared by everyone standing nearby — Mapbox and Geoapify receive that cell, not your exact position, and never your account.
How long we keep it
Posts and messages stay until you delete them or ask us to. Events that have finished are marked complete a day afterwards and drop out of every feed. Your anchor is a single row that is overwritten, not accumulated.
Deleting your data
You can delete your own posts and replies in the app at any time.
To erase the whole account, open the Me tab and choose Delete account. Everything posted from it goes with it — posts, replies, photos and chats — and there is nothing left to sign back into.
If you would rather we did it, write to quartier0814@gmail.com and send the display name shown in your Me tab. We will delete it and confirm.
Children
Quartier is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that affects what we collect, the date at the top changes and beta testers are told in the app.
